Don't I know you?

D'Ann Neighbors Edge

After 17 years in the Marine Corps, with all the moves inherent in that lifestyle, Uncle Sam decided it was time to move the Edge Clan once again and this time it was practical joke time!  He told us we had to move to Dallas and then graciously changed that to Fort Worth.  We left there 17 years ago and now we have to leave our home of two years on the coast of Havelock, North Carolina to live in a real city again?

Well, to make a long story short, because a military move is always good for a side-splitting laugh, we arrived in Ft. Worth in the summer of 1999.

As I made my way around town I kept seeing this face that was awful familiar.  One day, in Kroger, I saw her and had to ask myself “where do I know her?  Was it Tennessee or North Carolina or Okinawa?  I know I know this person!”

Every few months I would see her somewhere and wonder again, but I could never put my finger on where I knew her.

Finally, the first day of school the next year, our son Jarett was starting high school and there stood this woman I've been banging my head about.  I walked past her still wondering where I knew her from, but then thought NO! I made myself return and do the rude thing.

"Excuse me, I know you from somewhere. Are you a military wife?" I asked.

She told me no.

"Well, I know that I recognize you from somewhere.  Did you teach in Havelock, North Carolina year before last?"

Another no.  “Ok, now I know I'm not crazy. Persevere, D'Ann,” I thought.

"May I ask where you have taught before?"

“I don't remember anywhere except Humble High School,” she answered.  AH-HAH! I was talking to none other than Mary Catherine Holcomb, our illustrious Government teacher.  I knew I knew her, and proceeded to tell her I'd graduated from there.  We talked a bit and I thanked her for her time.

Well, later that day, as it turned out, Jarett was in her World Geography Pre-AP class.  When she came to his name on the roll, she told him she'd met me and that I made her feel really OLD!  Not to worry, he got an ‘A’ in the class.
